Dereham Society celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by planting a growing tribute for local people and wildlife

  • Neatherd Moor close to Clark’s Acre
  • Saturday  17th March 10.00 a.m.

Dereham Society with Dereham Town Council in the Neatherd Moor are planting free trees from the Woodland Trust to celebrate The Queen's Diamond Jubilee and help improve the habitat for wildlife on land recently purchased by Dereham Town Council.
Dereham Society are receiving a free105 tree pack, which will be used to plant a hedge along the side of land adjacent to Clark’s Acre. This fits in with the Green Framework to develop corridors for wildlife and improve the visual amenity for walkers. Larger packs of 400 trees are available for planting in the Autumn once the first batch of 105 trees are successfully planted.

If you would like to plant a tree with Dereham Society, come prepared. A coat, warm clothes and a pair of boots or wellies are recommended.
The Woodland Trust aims to plant six million trees in total through 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee. Communities and schools are at the heart of the project, with more free Jubilee tree packs available for November 2012 which groups can apply for now.

In 2012, all free tree packs contain an exclusive Royal Oak sapling which has been grown from an acorn gathered from a Royal estate such as Sandringham or Windsor. The packs are being provided in partnership with IKEA, the world’s leading home furnishing retailer which has worked with the Trust for over 4 years and has generously raised over £1.4 million for the charity so far.

Tree planting is a fantastic and fun way for people to do something lasting and meaningful in our local area to mark the Jubilee. We hope our trees will help attract wildlife and make a real difference to everyone who will see them. It's incredible to think that in just a decade, our trees will be as tall as us. We'd like as many people from the community to come along and help us."

Victoria Hodson from the Woodland Trust added: "We are delighted Dereham Society are using our free tree scheme to plant more trees in Neatherd Moor. Communities are transforming their neighbourhoods, growing their own fruits and food, creating shade and shelter, and providing new homes for wildlife. This year, we are offering more free trees as part of our Jubilee Woods Project to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee, and would love more communities to get involved."

With HRH The Princess Royal as patron, the Jubilee Woods project is only one of a handful of projects to carry official Royal approval. Communities can take part by applying for a free pack at www.jubileewoods.org.uk/communitytrees. Applications for autumn packs are due to close in October.

Sainsbury’s is the lead corporate sponsor for the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods Project. Over the next fifteen months, Sainsbury’s will be supporting the project and raising £1.5 million for tree planting by increasing the number of donations made from products in store. Sainsbury’s will later this year also be giving customers the opportunity to make a ‘pledge’ in store to plant a tree to mark the Diamond Jubilee and promoting activity through the retailer’s Active Kids scheme, to encourage schools to plant trees.

The Woodland Trust now offers a range of mechanisms to inspire and enable large organisations, schools, community groups and individuals to plant trees on their own land.
The  Jubilee Woods project has The Queen's support - and HRH The Princess Royal as patron. It will commemorate the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, marking Queen Elizabeth's 60th year as monarch. Next to Queen Victoria in 1897, she is the only British sovereign ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. The Woodland Trust is the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity. It has 300,000 members and supporters. Visit www.jubileewoods.org.uk for more details.
